Love To Love You, Donna.

"Because I'm just an ordinary person that did some extraordinary things."
- Donna Summer, 1948-2012.

I can't believe I have to bury another one of my idols today - Disco Queen Donna Summer. Her untimely death strikes deep - especially on the heels of MCA passing. Man, seriously FUCK CANCER. It's getting harder and harder for me to keep writing these memorials. I can't take another one of my divas dying. It's too much for my heart...it hurts to see all these talented, kind and generous people taken from us too soon.

Donna Summer was one of the greats - I am so thankful for what her legacy has brought to the pop world. Before Madonna, before Britney - there was Donna Summer. She paved the way for electronic dance music and was the original "bad girl". I used to borrow my bicurious (ex) boyfriend's vinyl copy of Bad Girls and listen to it over and over. It was the first dance record I heard where all the music looped continuously and it blew.my.MIND. She still remains one of my biggest influences. I loved how she was glamorous and sex-positive and strong and yet still kept it so so classy.

I posted this video back in August 2009 but I'm re-posting it in honor of Donna. My inspiration was Julia Robert's character in Pretty Woman.

I love you and I miss you so much already. Rest in Peace, Queen.

Intergalactic

"If you can feel what I'm feeling then it's a musical masterpiece / If you can hear what I'm dealing with then that's cool at least / What's running through my mind comes through in my walk / True feelings are shown from the way that I talk" - "Pass The Mic", Adam Yauch, 1964-2012

Back in 2000, Princess Kuttz and I skipped school and traveled to the Chinese Embassy in New York City to march in a Free Tibet protest (we did NOT get permission from our parents). While we were there, the one and only MCA from the Beastie Boys showed up to protest too! Princess Kuttz is the biggest Beastie Boys fan I know. I remember when she noticed that MCA was at the protest. She tugged on my sleeve and just pointed to him while she held her breath from the excitement. It was so surreal but we were too awestruck to ask for an autograph (and also wanted to respect his privacy since he was with his wife and toddler). It still remains one of my favorite memories from high school.

I thought of Kuttz and our silly Beastie Boys music videos and that magical day in NYC as soon as I heard the news about MCA's passing. Watching the videos heals a little bit of the pain I feel from seeing another one of my idols die too young. This blog is turning into a memoriam...I'm sick of burying my heroes ;-(

Big ups to MCA - not only a great artist but a truly remarkable human being who didn't just talk the talk but walked the walk. Rest in peace Adam.

I'm Every Woman

"I like being a woman, even in a man's world. After all, men can't wear dresses, but we can wear the pants."
- Whitney Houston, 1963-2012

What is there to say...a light has gone out. I'm angry. I'm sad. I'm heartbroken. I have always looked up to Whitney - she was a true entertainer. She had the best voice in the music industry, in my opinion. She'll never, ever be replaced. I'm still kind of in shock about everything ;(

Here's a music video that I thought was lost forever. It made me laugh watching it again and remembering all the things I love about this amazing diva. Rest in peace Whitney.
